Who We Are
Humanitas Initiative was founded by Zilka Gerritsen, a Venezuelan-born, Irish-rooted community bridge builder now based in Northern Ireland. Having navigated belonging across three continents and cultures, Zilka brings something no textbook can teach: the knowledge of what it actually feels like to arrive somewhere new and work to make it home.
That experience is the foundation of everything we do. We work with councils, community organisations, and public bodies to move integration beyond policy and into practice; creating spaces where people genuinely connect, not just coexist.
Integration without understanding is just proximity.
We believe that while none of us choose where we are born, every one of us has the power to choose what kind of community we build. Integration is not a one-way street. It is a mutual commitment: one that asks the welcoming community to open its doors with genuine warmth, and asks the newcomer to honour the place they have chosen and enrich it with everything they bring.
We call this Responsible Integration. And we believe it is the only kind that lasts.

These are our signature community programs designed to bridge the gap between newcomers and local residents. We facilitate honest and direct dialogues that move beyond labels to find our shared humanity. Our workshops emphasize the mutual path of belonging: the welcoming spirit of the local community and the active responsibility of the newcomer to honor the laws and enrich their new home.
Strategic Consultancy for Social Cohesion
We provide expert guidance to local councils and educational bodies looking to move beyond simple diversity checklists. Our consultancy helps organizations design integration frameworks that are ethical and effective. We focus on building structures where every individual is treated as a human being first ensuring that integration efforts lead to genuine social stability and long term belonging.

The Humanitas Collaborative: Expert Speaker Series
We draw on lives lived across continents, cultures, and identities. We challenge audiences to move beyond tolerance as a ceiling and ask what genuine belonging actually requires from institutions, from communities, and from each of us as individuals. Whether speaking to a council chamber, a community hall, or a conference stage, the message is consistent: we do not choose where we are born, but we absolutely choose what we do with where we land.
We believe that a bridge of belonging is built with many voices. Through this initiative we curate and host guest speakers, global experts, and local leaders to share their professional insights and personal stories on integration and social innovation. These forums serve as a powerful platform for diverse voices to contribute their unique gifts and perspectives, providing organizations and communities with a deeper understanding of our shared human core and the future of ethical integration.
